Your Pro license (Gumroad) activates on up to 2 Macs at the same time. You can deactivate an old Mac yourself at any time (during activation on the new Mac or in Settings → Your devices), so a broken or wiped Mac never locks you out. The App Store version is tied to your Apple ID instead. One Cloud Plus membership is linked to one Pro license.
The app itself is the same. Two differences matter. First, ShotScreen Cloud uploads and the optional Cloud Plus plan are in both the Gumroad and Mac App Store versions. Second, the SHOTSCREEN20 20%-off code only works on Gumroad. The Gumroad version updates via Sparkle; the App Store version updates through the App Store.
ShotScreen Cloud is optional hosting for your shared screenshots and recordings, available in both the Gumroad and Mac App Store versions. ShotScreen Pro includes 10 uploads with 35 MB of total storage. Cloud Plus (€3.50/month) raises that to 5 GB with unlimited uploads, and adds screen-recording uploads (mp4, mov and gif). Every share has an expiry time you choose, an optional password, and can be deleted individually or all at once. Raw files are served from a separate domain, shotscreen-usercontent.com.
macOS cannot capture a scrolling page on its own, but ShotScreen can. Press ⌘⇧3, pick the window or area, and ShotScreen scrolls the content automatically while showing a live preview, then stitches everything into one tall image. Locally. Text and QR recognition, background removal and image upscaling all run on-device using Apple Vision, BiRefNet and Real-ESRGAN. Nothing is sent to a server, there is no account, and there is no tracking. See the privacy policy for details.
Only for specific things, never to track how you use the app. Capturing, editing and the on-device AI all work completely offline. The app automatically checks our server for a service message, such as planned maintenance, when it starts and a few times a day; that check carries no account, no device identifier and no information about how you use the app, and we keep no record of who asked. Beyond that, the app only goes online for things you have set up or chosen: uploading to ShotScreen Cloud, keeping an activated license verified, and, in the direct download version, automatic checks for app updates. None of that carries any information about how you use the app either.
ShotScreen runs on macOS 13.0 (Ventura) and later and requires a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later). Intel Macs are not supported. Microphone recording requires macOS 15.0 or later.
Yes. ShotScreen records an area, a window or the full screen to MP4 (H.264, hardware-encoded) with system audio and, on macOS 15+, microphone audio. You can trim the clip with draggable in/out handles and adjust playback speed.
Yes. Press ⌘⇧T to run text recognition on any capture. ShotScreen uses Apple Vision for accurate OCR and also detects QR codes and barcodes, copying the result straight to your clipboard.
Yes. A pixel-perfect crosshair overlay appears on every screen during selection, and ShotScreen handles mixed-DPI setups (a Retina display next to a non-Retina one). It can also stitch all your monitors into a single image.
Yes, on-device. ShotScreen removes backgrounds using Apple Vision for speed or the BiRefNet Core ML model for higher quality on fine detail like hair. No internet connection or account is needed.
Yes. ShotScreen upscales images 2×, 4× or to a custom width using Real-ESRGAN, running locally on your Mac. A before/after slider lets you compare the result against the original.
A full markup editor: pen, highlighter, lines and arrows, shapes, text, callouts, labels, blur/pixelate to redact, and a magnifier. It also supports crop, resize, rounded corners, a 3D perspective tool that can tilt the whole image or a single layer, and a layers panel for composing shots.
The stash is a floating gallery that holds your recent captures in a masonry grid. It survives restarts, so screenshots stay put until you clear them, and you can drag any item straight into another app.

No, not to capture, edit or use the AI. ShotScreen itself has no account and no sign-in: the Gumroad version verifies your Pro license key with Gumroad, and the App Store version is licensed through your Apple ID. The one exception is the optional ShotScreen Cloud, which uses a simple passkey sign-in for your web gallery.
